In Dr. Rolf’s traditional recipe it is 10 sessions. Some in the field refer to anything after this Basic series is “Advanced”. That is a quick and workable definition, but it doesn’t quite make the necessary distinction for me.

Let me elaborate. The Basic Series is mostly about addressing local imbalances and associated compensations. Arms/shoulder, legs/hip, neck/shoulder, neck/head, feet/ legs; those kind of relationships.* There is a direction to whole body balance and integrity in the Basic Series, just that the process tends to focus locally in terms of working procedures.

Advanced is more of a “head bone connected to the foot bone” kind of thing. As I have learned and practice it, it is a set of 5 formatted sessions that fine tune the OVERALL body structure. Local issues will certainly be addressed, but the intention and main focus is to significantly refine the whole body as a structure in gravity. (If someone seeking Advanced work presents a significant set of still unresolved local imbalances, then I will work on a post-10 basis with the goal of getting them ready for the Advanced.) As such, it deals with patterns in the body which exist between sometimes very distant body segments and often, in my experience, without any easily obvious anatomical referents. The explanation for the latter is in the unique historical patterning of an individual’s body; this is the product of one’s inherent genetic blueprint combined with one’s own history of learning, developed habits and patterns of body use, accidents, and traumas.

Additionally, the Advanced Series is much more subtle than in the original series sessions. Touch has more of a quality of pointing out and/or giving direction or suggestion; not so much the dynamic and sometimes firm manipulation in the “working things out” stages of the Basic work. Think, “micro-movements, alternative gestures”. Also, the client is much more in command and active. Responsibility is an embedded theme is all the Structural Integration work; but the Advanced Series represents a quantum shift forward in that respect.

Advanced Structural Integration is not for everyone. And it is not something that I offer automatically to anyone who has completed the Basic Series. Not everyone is ready for that level of subtlety and transformation. In my practice there is an intake interview and structural analysis to access readiness. In any event, let me stress, it is not even necessary for anyone to advance beyond the basic training. Most people enjoy the lifetime benefits of the Basic Series of Structural Integration and that is sufficient. The Advanced Series is self-selecting; kind of in the realm of, if it’s for you, you’ll know it.

*Regarding associated compensations. For example, one shoulder higher or differently placed relative to the other. Head forward of the shoulders. Waist/hips tilted forward rather than horizontal. Feet pointing off direct forward. This, to name a few of the more common situations.

Additionally, there seems to be an analogous relationship with the lower back and the neck. Adding balance at the lumbar-sacral level of the spine has effects above in the cranial-cervical-thoracic region. Vise-versa, but to a lesser extent since structure develops from below; therefore, corrections at the lower level will impact more profoundly than upper to lower. Another prominent analog relationship is between the hips and the shoulders. The pelvic girdle and the shoulder girdle. Same situation. Constructive changes below support and foster normalizing above.

After the Basic Series there is a complete result, nothing more to do as far as that level of development is concerned. Yet, after the Basic Series things can percolate to the surface and/or events can occur that justify coming back for a “tune-up” or refresher session or a short series. I prefer to call this kind of work Post-10, not Advanced.

David D. A great mind and pioneering thinker, a creative scientist years ahead of her time, she spent much of her life exploring the human capacity for healing. Her education, professional career and life circumstances led her to explore various modalities that gradually evolved into what become known as "Structural Integration" and then took on the name "Rolfing." Essentially, Rolfing seeks to address the development and liberation of an individual's innate human potential, with the palliation of symptoms an ancillary benefit. Dr Rolf was initially educated and trained within the empiricism of scientific academia and remained firmly rooted in those traditions. Her work was founded upon the physics of aligning the human body within the field of gravity. She integrated her scientific perspective with mind-body awareness without relying on an eastern mystical philosophy to justify her conclusions. It is clear from her writings and teachings that her studies of biological chemistry and physics provided critical insight, inspiring such statements as, "You cannot change the energy field, but you can change the man--the body will go as far as it will physically go, within the laws of physics." and "What would happen to behavior if you changed chemistry? The first way to change chemistry is to change physics." Dr. Rolf conceived of "Rolfing" as a gateway into making progressive changes within the human organism, encompassing the physical, intellectual and emotional aspects.”

David D. Some refinements and the additions of 1) so-called Post 10 work and 2) the Advanced 1-5 Series. With time shown for integration between sessions and levels.

Rolf Structural Integration is about relationship. The anatomical relationships of the major segments of the human body as a whole. And, the relationship of the whole organism to its principal environmental imperative, Gravity.

Both of those levels of relationship are embedded in the process from the very beginning. But, the Basic 1-10 Series arguably could be seen as placing more emphasis on the internal, anatomical relationships. The Advanced 1-5 Series clearly is focused mainly on the larger environmental, contextual frame.

So called Post 10 work in Rolf Structural Integration is about refinements from the Basic series, and additional work necessitated by life circumstances. It is also preparatory to the Advanced work.

David D. Anyone can easily incorporate these self-help tips into the course of their daily living.

The trick now is to, as they say, just to do it.

My recommendation for anyone who sparks to the idea of becoming consciously active in raising the level of balance of their body . . . First do all the things that you already know you should do to improve your health.

Spend some time regularly sitting straight and relaxed, doing nothing, and observe how things tend to start to resolve themselves from a quiet receptivity in that place of simple balance. To keep from mental distractions while sitting, try following the flow of the breath. Better, and the simplest, sit focused on presence awareness. Also, do consider some active gentle discipline such as hatha yoga or Tai Chi. Low impact cardiovascular exercise like brisk walking, swimming.

Ready for more, then call give me a call. But, first things, first.

Personal Posture/Structure Assessment

Stand in front of large mirror in your underclothes. It helps if you create a plumb (true vertical) line as a reference. Just tape a long string high on the mirror and weight it with something small (a key will do) so it hangs straight up and down. Now position your body so that it lines up with the vertical string at the center of your nose.

Looking at the front of your body . . . Is there more of your body on one side of the line? Which parts? One shoulder higher…or lower? Wider? Larger…or smaller? Hips level, or one side higher/lower? Legs straight? Knees pointing directly ahead? Feet parallel?

And, now from the side…Is your head on top of your neck/shoulder, or jutting forward? Is the top of your body leaning forward from the waist? Maybe leaning forward from the ankle? Waist horizontal, or tipped forward? If you align the center of your ear with the line of gravity (same as that plumb line), does it scribe a line down to the middle of your ankle?

Some Things You Can Do Right Now

Spend more time in your body’s natural pattern. The hallmark is loose, easy, natural. Nothing forced.

The design of the human body calls for symmetry, horizontality, and verticality. This is basic Anatomy and basic Physics. If you see anything in how your body stacks up that is off this simple standard, make the necessary corrections to your posture for yourself. Just, remember, easy does it; nothing forced.

Standing . . .

For starters, distribute the weight of your body equally between both feet. Back your weight off your toes, more centered. Test this by raising/wiggling the toes. (It surprises many of my clients that when they raise their toes in a standing position, the line of their body very many times shifts rearwards.) Point the top of your head skyward. Let your waist move back a little. Repeat, let your waist move back a little. Drop that old habit of pulling your shoulders back. Instead, let your arms/shoulders rest easy on your rib cage. They may feel like they are hanging forward. That is usually because the arms are now forward of their familiar set. You notice the difference. It is not usual, but it generally is more toward normal. Verify in the mirror the verticality in this new way of letting the shoulders drape over the rib cage.

These suggestions are very basic. But, first see to making them conscious habits. In very short order your body will readjust to a new, healthier pattern. There are lots more tips, but this for starters.

A good whole body exercise is to first imagine a line anchored to the center of the earth and extending out to cosmic infinity. Then place your body so you stand around that line so that it runs from between the ankles upward and out through the center top of the head. This is close to what is called the Mountain Pose (Tadasana) in hatha yoga, and it is arguably the pinnacle of human physical achievement. Done right, that is. There is a slight difference between the Mountain Pose and what is suggested here. The yoga pose is, for lack of a better term, rather “pose-ish”; the components of the yoga asana/posture involve holding a form. That is fine in hatha yoga, but we are after something more completely surrendered and effortless.

Just standing there, you ask? Just because it looks easy, it isn’t. The paradox is that, when you do discover that possibility in the makeup of your body, it is in fact easy. Dr. Rolf, the originator of Structural Integration exhorted, “Consign your body to gravity.” In that pure balanced vertical place is where you can let go, and discover the uplifting, supporting aspect of gravity. There you can let go bad postural habits and deeply engrained holding patterns. It is a place of power, presence, grace, and ease.

Go there.

Sitting . . .

Nothing new here. Don’t slouch over what you’re doing. Sit up straight. Keep your head over your shoulders (not in front). Bring your reading up to eye level.

***The Chair Itself***

Please, this is not some rule about how you should always sit or the kind of chair that you must only use. Just a recommendation to spend more time sitting properly. Especially at the work station. Eventually, your own body will give you the signals when you are treating it right. But first, some new habits to form.

In order to sit properly, you need a proper chair. The chair, and specifically the chair height itself, are often overlooked. The suggestion is to go for a firm, flat surface basic chair or bench, and with a seat height that is right for your body dimensions. The kind of sitting described here is for “self-supported” sitting; a chair back is not involved at all.

Most average height individuals will do well with a basic flat firm seat chair or bench. Almost all chairs are designed based on a 17 ½ to 18 inch seat height. If you are shorter or taller, that height is not truly supportive. For smaller stature people the feet may not place completely or squarely on the floor. For taller types, the average chair requires extra effort to sit up straight; the short seat tends to force the body to collapse. Effort is needed to counter this.

If your feet don’t reach the floor, the simple fix is to give them an elevated platform. You determine what works. A stack of books, in a pinch. If you sit a lot at work, for shorter types it is recommended that you construct a more permanent foot rest for under the work station.

For tall folks, the seat height should be higher. You should get yourself a chair that is heighted to your body dimensions. Here’s a good rule of thumb. You are sitting in a self-supported posture when the thigh is dropping down at a small angle from the hip joint to the knee. Another way to get the right height is to sit with your feet flat on the floor and your lower legs straight on the vertical. Then measure from the floor at the back of the heel all the way up to well under the upper thigh, just in back of the knee joint. That measurement is generally, +/- a fraction, a good seat height for your body measurement.

A word about the seat surface itself. It should be flat/level, stable, and firm. And for firm, make that a hard surface, or only thinly padded. Sitting on a firm level surface is necessary to locate and sense the sit bones (ischial tuberosities) of the pelvis. These two bones are rounded front to back. You can sense this rocking chair like design for yourself by rocking your pelvis forward and backward gently. The firm surface will come into play when you put together these sitting instructions with the breathing pattern instructions that follow below.

Happy sitting!

Walking . . .

Walk with your feet/toes going straight ahead. Allow your arms to swing free and easy. Let your body twist naturally. That means the hips too. Walking is a flowing/gliding motion with the legs swinging under the torso, feet landing softly. In other words, the whole body enjoys the motion. Just because this instruction is brief, don’t overlook the elements.

There may be some psychological “investment” in your pattern of walking. Proper movement in walking has a salutary and energizing effect on the whole system. Break loose. (You better, or we’ll notify the Ministry of Silly Walks, forthwith.)

Breathing . . .

Yes, breathing. Just like with standing, sitting, and walking, who taught you to do that? Who taught you to breathe? Alright, there is an automatic event in breathing. Here, we are talking about working constructively with the breath.

When I ask clients in the context of an actual Rolf Structural Integration session to “take a big breath”, it is almost guaranteed that I’ll see a general tensioning of the body, with the shoulders and upper body pulled up and back sharply, and maybe even the chin nicely buried in the chest. Ask a little kid, and this is what you will mostly likely see. Now that you suspect that this is not what we are after, don’t bother to check yourself. You already are clued in. But to what, now? What is the correct/natural way to breathe?

Imagine the breath as a fountain rising straight up from deep down inside your body. Let the body passively respond to the growing volume of the breath as it rises. In this visualization the action of the breath is a straight line. The rib cage in this pattern moves up and out front and back and sideways, in all three directions.

***A Helpful Tip for Low Back Pain Sufferers***

Spend some consistently regular time sitting in a self-supported posture, following the breath. If you haven't already, read and follow the instructions for sitting, particularly in respect to the kind of seat height and firm level seat surface that is integral to this instruction. You may notice that as the breath rises, there is a general filling of the entire trunk, both the rib cage and abdomen. This filling is pushing your lumbar spine (lower back) rearward/backward. Lengthening the spine. Yes? This may not be so easy to sense if you don’t have a lot of movement in the lumbar/sacral junction, where your lower back meets the sacrum of your pelvis, low at your waist. That is not unusual.

If you are having some difficulty sensing this rearward lower back movement on the in breath, you can help it along a bit and exaggerate the movement by rolling back the hips slightly rearward/backward with every inhale. (You now probably understand why the hard flat chair surface is necessary.) It sequences like this: On the in breath—rib cage expands and lifts, torso fills, lower back moves rearward, hips roll slightly back. On the out breath—rib cage deflates/compresses, pressure on torso/abdomen releases, lower back returns to a deeper arch, hips roll slightly forward. You will see that there is a general lengthening of the spine on inspiration, shortening on exhalation.

(This is a rudimentary exercise. As you become more proficient and sense the automatic movement as it naturally happens with your breathing, you will start to discriminate that the hips really don’t move all that much, but follow the sacrum slightly. The sacrum itself is moving downward on inspiration, up on exhalation due to the lengthening and shortening of the spine on respective in breaths and out breaths.)

This idea of regularly spending time sitting and breathing may seem like a low yield, slow results effort. In most chronic situations there is probably some component to low back pain that includes limited movement. Besides whatever else you may be doing for a low back condition, bringing gentle movement into the area with the breath will be a facilitator.

Personalized Assistance?

After you have taken it as far as you can on your own, you will discover that there is a natural and automatic aspect to healing. You never stop growing, really. Next, you may want to further this natural evolutionary process with some expert help. Rolf Structural Integration is definitive and peerless for bringing the makeup of the body to an effortlessly upright, unstressed, balanced stance. Think integrity, power, ease, grace, presence. The power and genius of this approach is how in a very short time such profound constructive change can be achieved.

At Your Service

David D. She selected her words well. Indeed, the name, Structural Integration, does imply the full scope of her teaching. To begin with, her choice of the word, structure, is clearly descriptive. For it was her way of looking at the human physical body, as one would any other material structure, which grounds her work upon the basic laws of physics. However, since structural analysis alone is of limited value, it was Dr. Rolf’s original research in biochemistry, which provided a key for unlocking the human structure and which gave birth to her method. The Recipe, her procedure for establishing myofascial balance and relieving chronic structural stress, is her gift to humankind.

“Integration,” however, is the word which best describes the true thrust of her work. On the physical level, “integration” includes the concepts of balance, symmetry, and wholeness. But it is here that we leave the realm of pure science. For we cannot understand “integration” until we first comprehend “relationship.” And Dr. Rolf believed that one cannot enter the complex world of “relationship” without leaving the world of “things.” This is a great challenge, a shift of consciousness. The world of “things” is a rational, linear, scientific, verbal world. Whereas the world of “relationships” is non-linear and non-verbal and, therefore, not accessible to the purely rational mind. So it is here that we cross from science into art, from technique into mastery. As Dr. Rolf said, “It is the art of integration which separates the cooks from the chefs.”

Dr. Rolf’s work and major discoveries lie firmly rooted in physical reality. (She used to say, “Because that’s what I can get my hands on.”) But the full focus of her intellectual curiosity was not aimed toward structure alone. Rather, her motivating interest was in the energy fields which surround human structures. The gravity field and its relationship to structure, therefore, becomes the dominant theme of her teaching. What if a human structure could be integrated within the gravity field so that all movement was in continuous balance. Would the effects and experience of gravity not change from a downward, negative, entropic force into a supportive, positive, organizing force? (Many of us would now answer a resounding “yes,” from personal witness. This is remarkable, since even the best of us lives in this balanced state for brief periods of time only!) Would this person live longer? Stronger? Healthier? Happier? How would this affect mental health and function? How would this alter emotional health? Maturity? Responsiveness? Sensitivity? What would be the effect of a life lived with the perpetual support of our own cosmic field—rather than in conflict with it?

Unfortunately, organization of the structure, alone, does not permanently establish this ideal, super-balanced state. While fascial order may effect miracles in the relief of chronic symptoms and pain, and may commonly produce increased vitality and a new sense of general well-being, it does not fully integrate a living, moving structure within the surrounding gravity field. Something is missing. The conscious will of the being that lives within the structure must be actively involved. Here, we glimpse Dr. Rolf’s true genius with her invention of the concept of the Line. The Rolf Line is a line of vertical intention which extends through the bottom of the feet to the center of the earth and through the top of the head to cosmic infinity. The Line, in her concept of the fully “evolved” structure, does not pass through bone (except at the top of the head). The Line is transcendental. It forms a bridge between physical reality and the realm of pure energy, the non-physical. The Line integrates the physical structure with the gravity field. The Line joins Rolf physics and metaphysics into one clear concept. The awakening of the Line is the central challenge of her teaching. The awakening of the Line is the Rolf path for self-growth. The Line becomes our personal guide, our monitor of personal evolution. And inculcation of the Line into the very essence of our consciousness becomes our preoccupation. Dr. Rolf’s vision of unlimited human potential is inseparable from this personal path.

During the major portion of her life, Dr. Rolf’s overriding personal interest was directed toward yet another field of energy. Here we leave Rolf physics behind and move clearly into metaphysics. We move from her public message into her private teaching, which contends that humans are electromagnetic bodies with an electric core and a magnetic sleeve, similar to the earth itself. In an attempt to gain knowledge about this core energy and in pursuit of her interest in personal development, she undertook a study of tantric yoga. As a student under an eastern master, for well over a decade, she carefully examined the teaching for physiological referents. She began to develop an idea. What if, after years of discipline and meditation, one were able to remove all physiological and energetic barriers to the free flow of electric, core energy? And what if one were to place the negative pole of this energized core (root chakra) firmly into the earth while also spanning upward through the positive pole (crown chakra) toward infinity? Would the personal electromagnetic field be reinforced and energized by the field of the earth? Could this not describe a transcendent state of energetic integration between human and cosmos? Could this correspond to awakening of kundalini and the appearance of super-normal powers of mind and body? Are chakras the vortices through which this highly empowered electromagnetic source communicates with matter?

Her hypotheses do not stop here. She was not interested in trying to “improve” an ancient tradition. But what if this ancient path could be reformulated and restated for modern humans? What if this state of transcendent integration could be achieved while standing rather than sitting? How would human structure have to evolve? (The Recipe is full of goals which are her attempt to answer this question.) Could we awaken a heel chakra, more negatively charged than the root chakra? Would the additional core length imply an even more powerful electromagnetic field than that of the eastern master? And, further, what if the physical structure of this integrated being were so balanced, within the field of gravity, that movement did not disturb the integrated state? Is this kind of evolutionary shift of structure and consciousness conceivable? Certainly, such flights of visionary fancy are not fit fare for many rational, educated humans. And it’s not certain that she developed this hypothesis in every training class. But in many of them, she did.

What about discipline of mind and spirit? Surely, this path of the masters cannot be reduced to mere biophysics. Here, Dr. Rolf would suggest that, in addition to whatever spiritual and religious practice might empower an individual, the practitioner of Structural Integration chooses a path of service to his species. And with this service, whether conscious or not, comes refinement of mind and spirit, the ability to “love” in its highest sense. Additionally, the recipe is the vehicle through which the practitioner focuses and develops clear intention. The Recipe is the ritual and the discipline of this path of service.

David D. How imbalances in the arrangement of the body might be the underlying causes of chronic aches and pains and stress. Or, at least, contributors. They block your everyday effectiveness. Drain your energy. Keep you from your full potential in physical and creative pursuits.

Living with imbalances in the makeup of your body means only one thing… YOU ARE IN

VIOLATION OF THE LAW OF GRAVITY! Some string. A paper clip. And, a stick of gum.

DO THIS… Unwrap gum…chew…enjoy. Twist open paper clip. Attach a 60-inch (or so) length of string to small end (top) of clip. Let this gizmo hang on or near a full length mirror. Pause to admire your handiwork.

STEP FORWARD… Standing in front of the mirror place your body so that the vertical string lines up with the center of your nose. It’s best to remove your outer clothes for this. (IMPORTANT: Remember to lock the door for privacy sake.)

TAKE A LOOK… Standing in front of the mirror place your body so that the vertical string lines up with the center of your nose. It’s best to remove your outer clothes for this. (IMPORTANT: Remember to lock the door for privacy sake.) Is there more of your body on one side of the line? One shoulder higher…or lower? Larger…or smaller? Hips level? Legs straight? Knees pointing directly ahead? Feet parallel? Now from the side…Is your head on top of your neck/shoulder, or jutting forward? Are you leaning forward? Waist horizontal or tipped forward? If you align the center of your ear with the line of gravity (same as that string thing), does it scribe a line down to the middle of your ankle?

IMAGINE… Living in true, natural balance. Your body stacked up along the simple vertical. Relaxed and easy. Unencumbered by the pull of gravity. That is the natural pattern. Who wouldn’t want that? But, now to do something about it. You know, it’s in you. Or are you waiting for science to come to a firm grasp of the obvious? What you already know from common sense. Being in balance is better. Right?

SOME THINGS YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW!... Spend more time in your body’s natural pattern. The hallmark is loose, easy, natural. Nothing forced.

Sitting − Don’t slouch over what you’re doing. Sit up straight. Keep your head over your shoulders (not in front). Bring your work up to eye level.

Walking − Walk with your feet/toes going straight ahead. Allow your arms to swing free and easy. Let your body twist naturally. That means the hips too.

Standing − Distribute the weight of your body equally between both feet. Back your weight off your toes, more centered. Point the top of your head skyward. Let your waist move back a little. Drop that old habit of pulling your shoulders back. Instead, let your arms/shoulders rest easy on your rib cage. These suggestions are rudimentary. But, first see to making them conscious habits. In very short order your body will readjust to a new, healthier pattern. There are lots more tips, but this for starters.

PERSONALIZED ASSISTANCE?… Rolf Structural Integration is definitive and peerless for bringing the makeup of the body to an effortlessly upright, unstressed, balanced stance. Think integrity, power, ease, grace, presence. The power and genius of this approach is how in a very short time such profound constructive change can be achieved.

AT YOUR SERVICE... David D. Wronski has several years’ experience in transformational life coaching. He is expert at effectively working with individuals of all ages and varying backgrounds to foster positive life change for everyday effectiveness, peak physical performance, refined artistic expression, and freedom from pains and stress.

“My recommendation for anyone who sparks to the idea of becoming consciously active in raising the level of balance of their body... First do all the things that you already know you should do to improve your health. Spend some time regularly sitting straight and relaxed, doing nothing, and observe how things tend to start to resolve themselves from a simple receptivity in that place of simple balance. To keep you from mental distractions while you sit, try following the flow of the breath. Better, and the simplest, sit focused on presence awareness. Also, do consider some active discipline such as yoga or Tai chi. Low impact cardiovascular exercise like brisk walking, swimming. Ready for more, then call give me a call.”

David D. It is sometimes call Rolfing® after its originator Dr. Ida P. Rolf. Dr. Rolf put it this way…”When the body gets working appropriately, the force of gravity can flow through. Then, spontaneously, the body heals itself.”

In the course of Structural Integration the body becomes noticeably balanced, easy, and effortlessly upright. Chronic pains and stress associated with bodily imbalances resolve spontaneously. Having a balanced body is a foundation for personal growth, peak physical performance, and full artistic expression.

People of all ages, varying backgrounds, and different ability will get wonderful lasting benefits. It is a foundational life lesson for living well. The take away is an unambiguous engrained sense of true balance. You move with self evident ease, power, grace, and presence. It supports you to move through life unimpeded, to stay healthy, to live fully, and to reach your goals.

Besides my respect for the potency of this work for freeing oneself from chronic pains and stress, I am enthusiastic about how structural balance and integrity empower individuals to take a conscious, active role in raising the level of their health and wellness. I approach Structural Integration as a transformative growth process. More education than therapy. My understanding is that true structural balance in the fabric of the body itself is the foundation for realizing your highest potential for everyday effectiveness, athletic performance, creative expression, and fulfillment in life. I am very pleased to offer Structural Integration as a key support for anyone on the path of growth and self understanding. For children, I wholeheartedly recommend Structural Integration as a foundational life lesson that will serve them for a lifetime. Please consider it for yourself.

David D. Gravity is the Therapist"---Dr. Ida.P. Rolf

Goals and Benefits—Structural Integration is the name Dr. Ida P. Rolf gave to her original approach to health and well being. The main goal is to balance the whole body, head to toe, within gravity. As Dr. Rolf said…”When the body gets working appropriately, the force of gravity can flow through. Then, spontaneously, the body heals itself.”

Gradually, gracefully the body evolves to a noticeably easy, balanced, symmetrical, and effortlessly upright stance. Chronic pains and stress associated with bodily imbalances resolve spontaneously. Relief of symptoms is a byproduct of the main goal of aligning the body with the force of gravity. Also, looking beyond therapeutic concerns, having a balanced body is a foundation for personal growth, peak physical performance, full artistic expression, and self discovery.

People of all ages, varying backgrounds, and different levels of ability will get wonderful lasting benefits. It is a foundational life lesson for living well. This is especially true for children. They take away an unambiguous engrained sense of true balance to support them to grow up unimpeded, to stay healthy, to live fully, and to reach whatever goals they choose for themselves.

How Structural Integration Works—Structural Integration is formatted as a series of 10 weekly sessions. Each is tailored to your individual needs and guided by a specific set of structural anatomical goals. There is gentle, sculptural manipulation of the soft connective tissue and movement education. Structural Integration is peerless and definitive. It is not a substitute for appropriate medical attention or other therapies; it is complementary. Balancing your body with gravity activates and supports your innate ability to be healthy, effective, and to grow to your fullest potential.

Balance and Gravity—Balance is central to health. Indeed, health means balance. Reflect on how the human body must find its balance on this Earth. Just like every other physical object the body is under the constant pull of gravity. In fact, it is the single most prominent physical force the human body has to deal with. There is a direct link between how your body stacks up in gravity and the level of your health, well being, and effectiveness. The architectural design of the body calls for left/right symmetries, with the major segments stacked up vertically one on top of the other. Yet, as Dr. Rolf observed, being out of balance in this basic way is so commonplace it goes unnoticed. What is usual are unique, random, imbalanced patterns and their associated compensations. When we do see the rare individual who enjoys truly normal balance we are moved by the self evident ease, power, presence, and grace. We intuitively recognize this as our birthright. It is something we want for ourselves.

For Your Consideration—Take a moment and imagine feeling free and easy in your body. Moving with power, presence and grace. Your body in good order and free of unnecessary restrictions. Feeling good. Looking good. Empowered to do your best, to be your best. Invigorated to realize your full potential for sound health, well being, growth and achievement. These are some of the possibilities with Structural Integration.

Next Steps—Certainly, the idea of living in balance makes sense. However, learning structural balance as a youngster or reestablishing such balance when you are an adult does take doing. But, isn’t real growth about transforming yourself, applying yourself to turn your goals and aspirations into realities? When you decide to take this next step, Dr. Ida P. Rolf Method Structural Integration will give you definitive, personalized assistance.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://rolfink.blogspot.com/2008/05/gravity-is-tool-gravity-is-therapist-dr.html' title='"Gravity is the Tool. Or, at least, contributors. They block your everyday effectiveness. Drain your energy. Keep you from your full potential in physical and creative pursuits.

Living with imbalances in the makeup of your body means only one thing… YOU ARE IN VIOLATION OF THE LAW OF GRAVITY! Some string. A paper clip. And, a stick of gum.
DO THIS… Unwrap gum…chew…enjoy. Now from the side…Is your head on top of your neck/shoulder, or jutting forward? Are you leaning forward? Waist horizontal, or tipped forward? If you align the center of your ear with the line of gravity (same as that string thing), does it scribe a line down to the middle of your ankle?Standing in front of the mirror place your body so that the vertical string lines up with the center of your nose. Your body stacked up along the simple vertical. Relaxed and easy. Unencumbered by the pull of gravity. That is the natural pattern. Who wouldn’t want that? But, now to do something about it. You know, it’s in you.

SOME THINGS YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW!... Spend more time in your body’s natural pattern.

Standing − Distribute the weight of your body equally between both feet. Back your weight off your toes. Point the top of your head skyward. Let your waist move back a little. Drop that old habit of pulling your shoulders back. Instead, let your arms/shoulders rest easy on your rib cage.

These suggestions are rudementary. But, first see to making them conscious
habits.

Spend some time regularly sitting straight and relaxed, doing nothing, and observe how things tend to start to resolve themselves from a simple receptivity in that place of simple balance. To keep yourself from mental distractions try following the flow of the breath. Better, and the simplest, sit focused on presence awareness. Also, do consider some active discipline such as yoga or tai chi. Low impact cardiovascular exercise like brisk walking, swimming. Your medical history is discussed to highlight areas of particular emphasis and to clear for contraindications. Instant photos are taken to follow before and after progress. The first visit takes 90 minutes; subsequent sessions, an hour to 75 minutes. You can expect to be active during the sessions with coached movements, directed breathing, and focusing on internal awareness. Between sessions you may feel ongoing shifts in balance and awareness. It is not uncommon for clients to experience changes in their emotional life, generally leading to an improved sense of well-being.

Why ten sessions? The soft connective tissue system forms a whole continuous network from head to toe. Imbalances in one area of the body form complex patterns of compensation throughout the body. In order to achieve lasting results the series is needed to thoroughly address the whole structure in a systematic way.

How often should I come?
Sessions can be scheduled a week apart or spread out over 5 to 6 months. There is no set rule. Each session builds on the work of the previous. Between visits previous session changes are being integrated. Scheduling sessions one to two weeks apart is optimal to maintain continuity and momentum in the process.

What should I wear?It is important for me to see your physical structure and to observe the changes that occur during the session. Typical attire is modest underwear or athletic wear (plus top for women). You comfort is primary and you are encouraged to wear what you feel is appropriate for you.

Ten sessions - isn’t that expensive? It’s a question of your priorities and the value you see in doing this. Structural Integration is an investment in one’s long term health and well being. Think of it as a whole body make-over. The take away is tangible and lasts a lifetime. My fee for adults is $225 per session, payable at the time. Rates are lower for children, pre-teens, and students. Community service grants are available to those in need.

Does the series need to be repeated?
The Basic Structural Integration 10 series does not need to be repeated. Many clients report continued improvements in posture and movement long after their series is completed. It is recommended that no further work be schedules for 6 months to a year after the initial series. You can come back periodically for a “tune up” session(s) depending on need. There is also a 5 session Advanced Series for those motivated to further refine their development.

Does insurance cover Structural Integration?
First check with your insurance company to see if they will cover Structural Integration, Dr. Ida P. Rolf Method. In New Jersey practitioners are required to be licensed under the Massage and Bodywork Therapist Law. A doctor's referral may also be acceptable to your insurer. I will have you pay for the session at the time of service and then provide a statement so you can make the claim.

Does it hurt?Structural Integration does not have to feel painful. In fact, it should feel good. The sensation is one of being sculpted, tissue moving, pain and stiffness releasing. My touch varies from the very subtle to sometimes firm and dynamic. There can be a range of intensity from a level you can easily accept, sometimes so subtle that you hardly notice it, or to the point where you automatically resist. The practitioner and the client are in a dialogue, a cooperative relationship. From the very beginning of the series I make sure my clients understand their feedback is included and necessary. If at any time the sense of touch is unacceptable, you simply communicate whatever your needs so I can adjust appropriately, or stop.

What is “integration”?In one sense the body is integrated when the parts fit as they should by anatomical design. Like all other physical structures the human body operates under the influence of gravity. The constant pull of gravity is the single most prominent physical force the body has to deal with. Therefore, integration in the fullest sense is achieved when the individual human energy field aligns with gravity, the energy field of the earth.

What is “correct” or “normal” body structure?Structure refers to relationships, where things are designed to go. The major body segments—the head, neck, shoulders, torso, pelvis, legs, and feet—are designed to stack up directly over one another vertically. When there is balance, the left and right sides are symmetrical. By definition from basic Anatomy and Physics there is correct structure when the body stacks up vertically, with left/right symmetry and front to back horizontality.

How do people get out of balance? It is commonly understood that we automatically get bigger and stronger as we grow up. However, the arrangement of the body—the way the parts of the body fit together, the structure—doesn’t come about spontaneously. That is learned. In this regard we are mostly self-taught! Add to that accidents and traumas, illness, bad habits, inadequate learning and it becomes understandable how we are shaped by our experiences.

The average person lives with the body weight shifted away from the central vertical axis. Since the body is broader at the top than below when imbalances exist gravity tends to pull it down. Dr. Rolf said this: “Some individuals may perceive their losing fight with gravity as a sharp pain in their back, others as the unflattering contour of their body, others as a constant fatigue, yet others as an unrelentingly threatening environment. Those over 40 may call it old age. And yet these signals may be pointing to a single problem so prominent in their own structure, as well as others, that it has been ignored. They are at war with gravity.

What does it compare it to?
Every approach to human health and wellness is built on a particular model and method of approach. There are benefits to each and situations where one or the other is the appropriate choice. Structural Integration has a whole body structural perspective. The main goal is to balance the entire body, head to toe, along the lines of gravity. As such it is peerless and definitive. By balancing the soft tissue tensions throughout the entire musculoskeletal system the relationships of the various parts normalize, with the major body segments stacked up vertically and the sides symmetrical.

Physical Therapy…Physical Therapy is modeled on the idea of joint flexibility and strengthening musculature in and around an affected area(s). Structural Integration has to do with creating balance in the opposing tensions in the myo-fascial (muscular-soft connective tissue) system throughout the entire body.

Hatha Yoga…Structural Integration has much in common with yoga. I highly recommend it to my clients. It is said that Dr. Rolf considered yoga to be the best exercise system ever devised (with the proviso that the student worked with a good teacher). However, Dr. Rolf believed that something other than yoga—like hands-on manipulation—was needed to fully free the structure and achieve ultimate length and separation in the joints. For the beginning and intermediate yoga student Structural Integration can speed up and facilitate progress. For the advanced practitioner there are real opportunities for discovering new aspects of your being and accessing areas you may have been avoiding or unconsciously working around. Those who know have claimed that "20 years of hatha yoga is equal to the 10 session series of Structural Integration. "

Psychotherapy…Many schools of psychotherapy recognize the body (somatic) factor. The shape and health of the body affect one’s psychological makeup and experience of living. Structural Integration releases chronic pain and stress. One’s confidence, self image, and expressiveness are enhanced out of the simple event of standing easy and effortlessly upright. Clients’ before and after photos very often clearly show positive changes relative to maturity, stature, self confidence, and attention/presence.

Chiropractic…Chiropractic therapy focuses on boney relationships, particularly the alignment of the bones of the spine and individual joints. That method typically uses high velocity thrusting methods. With Structural Integration balance in the soft connective tissue system is the primary consideration. Unless the strain and tension in the soft tissue are balanced, however, the bones will continue to be pulled out of alignment. Structural Integration employs slower sustained pressures and works on the entire soft tissue matrix. After Structural Integration, when there is a need Chiropractic adjustments, the changes tend to come about more easily with deeper and longer lasting results. Balancing the tensions in the soft tissue network of the body allows the bones to stay in their proper relationship.

Who is it for?People of all ages and varying levels of physical ability and background will get wonderful lasting benefits. The singular benefit of Structural Integration is a balanced body. You experience it for yourself and the advantages are self evident. It feels at once right and familiar. It lasts. And it is not static. It evolves and refines over time. As your body begins to show signs of a higher order of structural balance, there is a profound sense of ease, lots of energy, and a joyful realization of new possibility. The impulse to realize your personal best is invigorated. This is something you own. It becomes a condition from which you live your whole life. You say, “I feel great! I feel wonderful!”

The Average Individual…Posture improves markedly. Movements are graceful and flexible. Tensions leave and chronic aches and pains dissolve. The so-called effects of aging soften and your look and feel vital again. There is the simple feeling of things working right. Self image is enhanced with a feeling of new possibility. Habits and addictions lose their grip. The mind is clear and emotions are more accessible.

Children…While Structural Integration is a powerful therapeutic tool, its main objective is educational. Children should be given an adequate experientially based training in the basic workings and correct use of their bodies. Looked at to correct obvious problems or as a preventative measure Structural Integration it is wholly worthwhile. Yet, it is far more that that. It is a lesson on how to stay young, to become all that you have in you to be. It offers a tangible understanding for living a balanced life.

If you have children in you care, you surely spend a good deal of time, energy, and money to provide the best education and give them every opportunity. Not even in what are considered to be the finest schools or in all the other special classes children receive, is there much enlightened teaching of the basic physical skills—standing, sitting, waking, how to use the body is a way that continues to foster balance, ease, efficiency and effectiveness. “Head up, chin down, shoulders back, chest up, stomach it” is still usual. This idea is not consistent with the dictates of proper structure. What’s more, it is a pattern that is “put on” and totally fails at having good structure and posture developed as an innate experience coming from deep down inside oneself. Having an early on sense of vertical alignment and true balance is a reference with which children can grow up unimpeded. It is a pivotal advantage enabling them to excel in life in general and in whatever fields thy may choose to enter and explore.

Physical Fitness / Athletics…If you are involved in physical fitness and athletics, whatever your level, you will discover new possibility to advance. When the body is no longer carrying imbalances, inner frictions resolve. You are less prone to injury. Recovery time is faster. Your most natural and efficient basic form emerges. You can take on the form(s) demanded by the discipline of your particular activity more easily. The need to compensate is taken out of the picture. Performance improves. The “zone” can be your usual experience rather than an elusive, chance event. Winning won’t only be the goal, it’ll be the stance you play from.
Artists…The artist will uncover new refinements and range of creative expression. The body as an instrument in exquisite balance “plays” in tune and expresses itself easily and gracefully. Transcending the technique of your medium, letting your spirit soar, real mastery can come into view. This joy and freedom is communicated in your art.

Self Knowledge…Those questing for self discovery, striving to attain to wisdom and true understanding will find through Structural Integration a lifetime guide. Out of a simple and clear sense of earthly rootedness and deep inner uplifted support, obstacles clear up just in the process of life itself. Your birthright of peace and joy can unfold and manifest. Feet firmly on the ground, head lifted heavenward.

The Functionally Impaired…Individuals with severe functional restrictions from birth or due to accident or trauma are groups with specialized needs. For those who since birth have never even known average functioning, the slightest gains can often be counted as miraculous. Building back adequate structure and function after one has sustained substantial loss from injury or illness can be a slow, heroic process.
In many cases the progress from any approach is highly individual and not predictable. Structural Integration, either alone or in conjunction with some other therapeutic regimen, will at the very least be an important facilitator. It also could quite possibly make the critical difference. It has often been a successful “last resort” option where other approaches were of little or no help.

Structural Integration for Children

(Excellent video at end of article.)

Finding one’s balance in the world is part and parcel to growing up healthy, being effective, and enjoying life. There is an ineluctable relationship between the architectural balance of the body in gravity and the quality of one’s life. Simple bodily balance has a profound, yet underappreciated effect on one’s health, experience of living, well being, and effectiveness. The balance of your body, its verticality and symmetry, determines whether gravity is friend or foe. Even so, this fundamental consideration for such balance—how well the body stacks up in gravity—goes mostly overlooked. Most of us do not enjoy living at anywhere near our natural potential for the kind of simple balance necessary to live in harmony with this constant force. The human body is just like any other structure on this Earth. It is subject to the downward pull of gravity. To ignore this or leave it to chance is to place oneself in default for putting up with chronic pain and stress and living below your potential, having vital energy needlessly expended just to keep upright and hold together.

Structural Integration is a personalized training to foster a significantly more balanced arrangement in the makeup of the body along the lines of gravity. Chronic pains and stress melt away as the body becomes more vertical, symmetrical, and effortlessly upright. Properly understood, Structural Integration is not a therapy. It is educational, a training in living with the foundation of being balanced according to the body’s anatomical design and the dictates of the laws of physics.

Children need to be given an adequate education in the basic working and correct use of their bodies. It is obvious that we automatically get bigger and stronger as we grow up. However, balance in how the parts of the body come to fit together doesn’t come about spontaneously. That is learned. In this regard we are mostly self-taught. We find our way in this respect by trial and error and by modeling those around us. Add in a unique personal history of accidents and traumas not fully resolved, bad habits that become ingrained, and improper and/or limited training. We are shaped by our experience. The resulting random arrangement of the body with its complex of compensations rooted firmly throughout the fabric of the body is what the average individual takes for granted and reports as “who I am.”

Youngsters have youth on their side. For the most part they are healthy. Consequently, we don’t usually give too much attention to their structure or how it will affect them later in life. Structural Integration looked at only as a preventative measure is wholly worthwhile. Yet, it is far more that that. It is a lesson on how to stay young, to become all that you have in you to be. It offers a tangible understanding for living a balanced life. This tangible balance is an ingrained knowledge that colors everything you do. It lasts and further develops over time.

If you have children in your care, you surely spend a good deal of time, energy, and money to provide the best education and give them every opportunity. Not even in what are considered to be the finest schools or in all the other special classes children receive, is there much enlightened teaching of the basic physical skills—correct standing, sitting, walking, how to use the body in ways that continue to foster balance, ease, efficiency and effectiveness. “Head up, chin down, shoulders back, chest up, stomach in is what usually suffices. That idea is not consistent with the dictates of proper structure. What’s more, it is a pattern that is “put on” and totally fails at having good structure and posture developed as an innate experience coming from deep down inside oneself.

Correct bodily balance translates to improved overall physical performance in basic motor skills and in athletics. The body moves with authenticity, ease, grace, and self evident power. Inner frictions are reduced lessening the potential for injuries. Recovery from injury and trauma is faster and residual effects minimized. The body in tune is an instrument ready for fluent and full artistic expression. Psychologically, living with a truly balanced body supports being present and attentive. Think inner strength, self-confidence, self reliance. It’s about literally standing on one’s own two feet, having a trusty compass for finding one’s way effectively and creatively.

Having an early on sense of vertical alignment and true balance is a reference with which children can grow up unimpeded. It is a pivotal advantage enabling them to excel in life in general and in whatever fields they may choose to enter and explore. They take away an unambiguous engrained sense of true balance to support them to grow up unimpeded, to stay healthy, to live fully, and to reach whatever goals they choose for themselves.

Gravity and Aging…Word “Up”!

My approach to health is based on balance. Balance in gravity. I’m also for everybody using the resources at hand to empower and enrich their lives. As Henny Youngman might say…”Take gravity, please.”

Dr. Ida P. Rolf saw chronic symptoms such as pain and stress, fatigue, poor self-image, early aging as “…signals pointing to a single problem so prominent in their own structure, as well as others, that it has been ignored. They are at war with gravity.” She developed an approach that offers personal assistance to individuals to live effortlessly upright, stress free, and supported by the energy field of the earth itself. Using..."Gravity is the tool. Gravity is the therapist."

Imagine that. Talk about deep ecology! The force of gravity itself is a vast untapped natural resource for human health and wellness. An old friend of mine recently (finally!) got it about gravity and said, “It’s amazing that with all the interest in ecology and natural living nobody’s talking about gravity.” (Much less doing anything with it, I would add.) We certainly wouldn’t buy that house if the foundation was off and the walls were cracking. Or drive down the street with our front end out of alignment. At Pisa I’ll let you take my picture next to the tower; but, no way am I going up there. But when it comes to our own physical architecture–how our bodies stack up–we don’t look at our own stance in gravity. My friend suggested that I write a piece on “gravity and aging”. So here we are. Thanks, buddy.

There is a problem with talking about gravity as such. Gravity is the most prominent physical force the body has to deal with. It is also so constant and ubiquitous a presence in our life that it’s not noticed. Perhaps we’re reminded of its being there when we drop something or take a spill ourselves. Mainly it doesn’t register. It’s as if you asked a fish, “how’s the water?” “What water?” Imagine if human beings were adapted to gravity to the same degree as the fish are to the sea. If dolphins can leap into the air, what can you imagine humans could leap into? Art Bell listeners, stay tuned.

So what about gravity and aging, you ask? Simply this…doesn’t it make just plain common sense that if you are not spending energy keeping yourself up, keeping yourself together, that you have more of it for living? You got to be in it to win it, though. And when your body is in balance along the lines of gravity you will discover its inner secret: It uplifts you. It is supportive, nourishing. It energizes. You feel great. You live well. And you last longer too.

Now that you’re all convinced that you should have more gravity in your life, now what to do? (While I offer clients personal assistance to balance their bodies along the simple lines of gravity, my aim in writing this is to give some pointers that will get you started. Should you want a helping hand, there are qualified practitioners in my field and in so many others that you can call on.) My Rx: This may seem a little strange to you at first; but you gotta try it. Just like when you drive your car you pay attention to the road (unless you’re one of those with a cell phone glued to your ear), so from now on—are you ready–feel your feet. That’s right, feel your feet.

Your feet are the foundation of your body, literally. By always feeling your feet you will start creating the habit of paying attention to your body. Such mindfulness will become an ingrained habit. It will grow to the point where you will become conscious of the felt sense of your whole body and the feelings that are moving through it. That’s when you will also be able to be aware of the signals your body gives when it is out of balance in gravity or any other way. Then you can make the necessary adjustments yourself. Comfortable, relaxed is the hallmark of living in balance. It’s in you. Go there.

David D. Scientists have so far removed a small amount of soil from the base and the structure came back nearly 2 ½ centimeters. Centimeters!? They plan to remove 50 cubic meters more and expect that this will cause it to come back another ½ meter. This is predicted to add another 350 years to the tower’s life!

If you look at your body in basic architectural terms…compared to a simple vertical line… how do you stack up? If you visited Pisa, would you blend in? Does your body look more like a question mark than an exclamation point? Are you zagging when you want to be zigging? Should we call the Ministry of Silly Walks? If you were a pizza, would the topping slide off? Does the girl next door like you just the way your are?…Next door! Huh, bunky?

Seriously, how our bodies stack up in the earth’s energy field, gravity, makes a lot a difference in the quality of our health and aliveness. We mostly don’t pay much attention to this “gravity factor” in our day-to-day living. Unless, if we accidentally drop something or have a spill; then, gravity asserts itself quickly and quite emphatically. So as we age we find ourselves too quickly breaking down and in need of all kinds of unnecessary outside supports. We live below our normal potentials.

Good news! We have choice. And it’s right at hand. Now, just to do it! Synchronizing yourself with the earth’s great energy field is easy. Stand up straight, already. Sit upright, with dignity. Move consciously and be present with the simple messages gravity is giving you in your felt sense of things. Like mamma said, “don’t slouch.

Yours In Gravity,

David D. Wronski

And, oh yes, there is something more…

It’s called Structural Integration, The Ida P. Rolf Method. I have been an enthusiastic practitioner of this craft since 1981 when I was certified by the Rolf Institute of Structural Integration. This unique approach to health and wellness offers personalized assistance should you want to take the matter of balancing your body with gravity to a higher level.

Structural Integration offers significant lasting benefits for people of all ages with different abilities and backgrounds. It is a personalized training to raise the level of balance in the architectural make up of the body. The body becomes noticeably easy, unstressed, and effortlessly upright. In proper alignment with gravity chronic pains and stress resolve automatically. It invigorates you to realize your full potential for sound health, well being, growth, and achievement. A balanced body is a solid foundation for self discovery, peak physical performance, and full artistic expression. The experience is vital and fresh. You move with grace, ease, power, and presence.

Rolf Talks Golf

I channeled Ida Rolf. What?...Who?...Whether or not you’re into such stuff or whether you give a hoot about the game of golf, please read on. Dr. Rolf says makes some sense.

Dr. Ida P. Rolf founded Structural Integration. She had solid credentials in the Biological Sciences and researched the causes and cures of chronic disease. Out of her findings she developed and then taught a unique approach to human health and well being. Her teaching now lives on in several accredited schools. The main goal of Structural Integration is to restore and evolve the body to its natural balance along the lines of gravity. It is possible to do this because the human body is plastic; it can change. And, just like any other structure on this earth, the human body is subject to the force of gravity. So it makes sense that when the body is more symmetrical and stacked up vertically it should work better. Right?

As a long-time student of the work of Dr. Ida P. Rolf I think I may have imbibed at least a little of her essence. That’s where the channeling stuff comes in. Who knew? In the spot where I work her picture looms just over my shoulder. Listen to what she whispered into my ear. (Why golf? One of my friends who I’m inviting to come in for Structural Integration is a golfer. So relating the work to his interest was on my mind. Even if you’re not a golfer, see if what she says doesn’t also apply to you in some way.)

Ida was famously blunt in pointing out that most people live out of balance with respect to the demands of gravity. In her words, “they are at war with gravity.” (If you look at yourself and others you’ll see whether what she is saying is true.)

Ok, Dr. Rolf, what’s on your mind?

“I just don’t get it about those golfers. All that fuss about pushing a little ball around on the grass. To each his own. They spend so much time and so much money on what not and whatever. Lessons. Books. Equipment. Play, play, play. Practice, practice, practice. Well, I will concede all that gets some improvement by and by. Some, anyway. By…and… by.

The one thing that those…duffers… haven’t seemed to have stumbled upon is taking a good long look at the complete picture. The body itself and how it’s put together is a big part of what goes into the game. The human body in structural terms is supposed to work with the force of gravity. That calls for architectural balance—symmetry and verticality. But, if you bother to look, you’ll see that the average person lives with the centers of gravity of the major segments of the body slipped out from the central axis. As for symmetry…you may have an arm and a leg on each side, but how different they are! Goodness, gracious! A lot of energy, time, and expense is invested in lessons and equipment trying to compensate for some of those obvious but unrecognized physical imbalances. Why not do something to get the body itself into proper alignment in the first place! I didn’t make this stuff up, folks. I didn’t create a problem just so I would have something to fix. Take a look at yourself in the mirror. See for yourself what I’m talking about.

Your body is in balance or it isn’t. Usually a little of both. People at the top of their game in athletics and the arts already know how important cultivating physical balance is. How about the average Joe…And Joanne? If you were a putter, would anybody buy one? Would you? Are you hoping for yet another design gimmick so you can go get another big bucks driver?

So if I’ve offended your tender ego by suggesting that you take a firm grasp of the obvious, get over it. Suck it up and do something about it. You don’t have to go see David. He’s a nice boy, but he’s big bucks. Just think about what I’m telling you. You’ll know what to do. Your aunty Ida loves you. Now straighten up!”

Whew! Thank you Dr. Rolf, ma’am. You said what I was afraid to say myself. Thanks for the compliment too. I think.

Dr. Rolf, Does It Hurt?

I've have been practicing Dr. Ida P. Rolf Method Structural Integration for a lot of years. Almost always the question comes up, "Does it hurt?" At the risk of seeming to dissemble in the manner of who-you-may-recall, I would say it depends on what your definition of "it" is.

Let me say a few words, then I'll have Dr. Ida Rolf, the originator of Structural Integration, speak for herself. (As channeled through me.)

These days there certainly shouldn't be anything painful in the quality of the touch used in Structural Integration. In the early days when the work was in its formative stages, Dr. Rolf garnered quite the reputation for her sometimes “ruthless compassion.” In all fairness, the great majority of the stories are about the wisdom, tenderness and empathy in her touch. But, bad press is what got the notice.

In my early years in the profession the official boilerplate answer to the pain question was that the training had changed, had been improved. I believe that was mainly an attempt to break with the past. But it begat another question, “Are you an old style, or new style Rolfer®?” Putting aside the issue of if and how the training may have changed, for my money the training from even the time I was certified by the Rolf Institute of Structural Integration in 1981 stressed care and sensitivity in the quality of touch. True, early students like me required some seasoning to learn how to approach a person’s physical pain in ways that relieved without causing added discomfort. So I admit that I have contributed to the pain myth. After all these years, in that area of how it feels, I would say that now... I’m not bad. (Come on down all you who were scared away before.) "Wow!" is an often heard client response.

People sometimes are in pain. Any intervention to ameliorate that discomfort must in some way "touch" upon it. The art of it as taught to me even way back when is to approach within the range of the client’s reasonable and current level of tolerance, at whatever that level may be. Some people jump at the slightest touch and others you have to shake to keep them from falling asleep. Different strokes for different folks is a bit trite, but says it. I have found that working within a client’s comfort zone produces the greatest results. I find that there are many clients who have to be reeducated to that; getting off the notion "I can take it" or that pain/gain thing.

I would say that the prospective client’s question about pain has more to do with concerns about having one's own pain touched. Personally, I insist that I be touched with respect, sensitivity, kindness, and expertise. As a practitioner I expect that my clients will want the same. Anybody can just barge in there and try to force a change. And that isn't effective anyway. "No pain, no gain"—that's so 20th century!

I also speculate that a deeper issue about pain has nothing to do with pain at all. I believe that the prospect of Structural Integration is the prospect for change. While change may be constant and inevitable, we do resist it. I have always found that the sometimes profound changes I have personally experienced in my own Rolfing sessions have brought me to a place that was certainly new, but always familiar. Like coming home.

One wonders what Ida Rolf herself would say about this?

Dr. Rolf was known to be rather direct in her speaking. She wouldn't be one to pamper sensitive egos. Be advised.

Dr. Rolf, if you please?...

If I have heard it once, I've heard it a thousand times...'Rolfing hurts.' There are a lot of sources for this concern. Structural Integration is well known for producing deep results. But that does not mean you must push hard, or deep. That's just plain wrong! I heard of a Chiropractor who demonstrated his interpretation of "Rolfing" to his patients with a vigorous and hard elbow rubbing on the ribs. I can only imagine what other well-intentioned health professionals have done to protect their charges from my fearsome grasp. And I further wonder how many people have been put off from something that would do them some real good by the uninformed insistence of people who have had no first-hand experience. This work is not a substitute or alternative to any other health approach out there. We aren't out to take anyone's business away. Well, maybe that's not completely true. We want to empower individuals to take a more active and responsible role in their health and well-being. And, what high minded health professional wouldn't subscribe to that anyway?

Most people who raise this question on pain haven't had any experience of the work themselves. They may have heard from someone that "it hurt", but they don't usually get the point that it's an experience of pain leaving. Yes, I know, in my early days I did have a tendency to be a little heavy handed and I'll accept my own responsibility for this. All the good people who have taken up this work since have had to deal with that persistent reputation. Let me just say that in time we all learn (hopefully); I certainly did. The truth is that with intentional practice one refines one's touch. That's true for all fields. Nowadays there should be no concern over having to endure any discomfort to make constructive changes in the structural balance of your body.

Since you may still think that my answer is merely self-serving and that once you're in my clutches the torture will commence, let me put your mind at ease. Unlike a lot of therapeutic approaches where some procedure is done to you, Structural Integration is more in the category of a teaching or training, and your willing participation and cooperation are requisite to the process. So, if at any time the touch is not acceptable for any reason, just say so and we can adjust the pressure, or stop. We have many avenues of approach to reach the goal. Much of Structural Integration can even be too subtle for a lot of people. The best work, the greatest improvements come about when we—you and I—respect your natural, comfortable limits.

Still a little reticent? Then, my dear one, I have to ask whether feeling some pain is the real issue. Those kids lined up for all those tattoos and piercings in the oddest of places don't seem to have any issues with that. I submit that the real concern may be that you don't want someone mucking around in your "stuff", as the kids say. But that doesn't seem to ring true to me either. Look at all that elective cosmetic plastic surgery going on these days. Talk about mucking about! That's what I call painful!

So maybe the real issue is that you're reluctant to really change. Deep down, in a real meaningful way. Being resistant to change is perfectly usual. Nothing to get in a bunch about. We all are like that. But, making constructive changes does take doing. As the arrangement of your body becomes more symmetrical and stacked up vertically, that's a real change for the better. Perhaps even a life change. Remember that the changes we are looking for are grounded in basic science, Physics and Gross Anatomy. Gravity is the standard of balance. It is the single most potent force the human body has to deal with. Out of balance gravity tears you down, saps your energy, and limits your potential. In balance, the energy field of the earth is supportive and you experience living light, fluid, and free.

Who wouldn’t agree with that. The thing that gets me is that the condition of being out of balance in terms of the simple and obvious dictates of gravity is so commonplace that it is not seen as such. Overlooked, under noticed. A men’s tailor at the Saks Fifth Avenue flagship store in New York City, conceded that he sees lots of arms, one longer than the other. His solution, snip some fabric. If that well suited, clueless chap is a golfer, he’s probably even now shopping for the next best driver or putter. But, hey, don’t consider what’s driving the driver, or putting the putter. I am not a golfer (they really do have a lot of it here in Heaven) but you get the point.

So now I see there is this big conversation about health care and its costs. Will someone please put a pencil on the costs directly attributable to one simple and observable fact: the widespread poor, sub-normal adaptation of humans to the field of gravity? If you are a little burned by hearing that, then you can go on your way comforted by the idea that ‘that’s just the way I am’ and then wait to take steps when ‘something happens’.

Please know, I'm not suggesting that you should come in for Structural Integration even though I know that it would do you a world of good. I am suggesting that, just like any physical structure on this earth, your body is subject to the laws, to the effects of gravity. If you look at yourself and others (really take the time to look) in relationship to the dictates of gravity, you'll see that virtually everyone is out of balance. Just because it is so common and widespread that it goes unnoticed doesn't give you an excuse to ignore the issue itself.

Especially if you are a health professional:

Whether you do anything about it is up to you. My Structural Integration offers personal assistance. You'll know what is best for you. Also remember, change is inevitable. Growth is optional. Structural Integration is about growth. A word to the wise is sufficient.

Put aside whether you should go for Structural Integration yourself. And forget about whether you should recommend it to your patients. Do look at the question of what the overall balance of the human body vis-a-vis gravity may have to do with health and chronic symptoms. Just really look. The fact of gravity is so simple and so close that it is easy to ignore. The question of balance in respect to gravity is so profoundly important and so far reaching in its implications that you probably haven't imagined that such change is possible. Well, it is. I showed that. And there are pictures to prove it.

Once you have sufficiently pondered the question you'll see for yourself how structural imbalances are a factor in chronic illnesses. Then we can have a discussion. You may even want to discuss the merits of my method. Don't be too proud of your present level of knowledge to keep yourself from taking a firm grasp of the obvious. How we stand in gravity is vitally important.

I wonder what it would be for humans to be as adapted to the field of gravity as the fish are to the sea. And, if life evolved from the sea, then what could be humanity's next evolutionary step?

On Pain

Khalil Gibran

Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding. Even as the stone of the fruit must break, that its heart may stand in the sun, so must you know pain.

And could you keep your heart in wonder at the daily miracles of your life, your pain would not seem less wondrous than your joy; and you would accept the seasons of your heart, even as you have always accepted the seasons that pass over your fields. And you would watch with serenity through the winters of your grief.

Much of your pain is self-chosen. It is the bitter potion by which the physician within you heals your sick self. Therefore trust the physician, and drink his remedy in silence and tranquility: For his hand, though heavy and hard, is guided by the tender hand of the Unseen, And the cup he brings, though it burn your lips, has been fashioned of the clay which the Potter has moistened with His own sacred tears.

<div align="center" class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;
